Malta has submitted its updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to the European Commission, aligning with the EU’s enhanced climate ambitions for 2030 under the Green Deal and the Fit-for-55 legislative package. NECPs, mandated by the EU’s Energy Union and Climate Action Governance Regulation, serve as a framework for Member States to plan and implement energy and climate policies, contributing to the EU’s 2030 targets.
Malta’s NECP recognizes that the challenge for Malta to reduce its national greenhouse gas emissions is a significant one and that while all sectors shall contribute, not all sectors are in a position to contribute to the same extent and within the same timeframes. It also highlights what has been ongoing and opportunities worth embarking on.
In the short term, energy generation is expected to lead national emission reduction efforts, while post-2030, reductions in sectors like road transport, fluorinated gases, and waste management will become increasingly important.
The Climate Action Authority played a pivotal role in shaping the updated NECP together with other entities and stakeholders, particularly in analyzing historical and projected greenhouse gas emissions and removals. This reinforces the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve Malta’s climate goals.
